White Bee Hoon @ You Huak Restaurant

Wondering whether you still remember a few week ago, I have shared with you some tasty BBQ Chicken Wing from a coffee shop stall opposite Sembawang Shopping Centre? Today, we will be exploring another coffee shop around the same area which is called "White Bee Hoon - 白米粉".

You Huak Restaurant is located at a corner of the road junction with 3 huge yellow square signboard written with the word "白米粉" which you can see it from far away. In this coffee shop there is only one "Zhi Cha stall - 煮炒摊" that is always packed with waiting customers who comes to patronise their signature dish which is the "Teochew Style White Bee Boon".

For today's dinner, we ordered 3 side dishes plus their signature "White Bee Hoon". Since it is around dinner time, the area is packed with a lot of waiting customers and we waited for about 20 minutes or more before the dishes arrived. First to be served is our favourite "Sweet & Sour Pork - 咕嚕肉" dish which cooked with a mixture of pineapple, assorted bell pepper and etc. Although the appearance of the dish look great and the sauce is appetising, but we find that the pork is rather a bit too tough. Maybe it had being over deep-fried or the type of meat use is rather not suitable. So in this case, we only rate it as 5.5/10.

Next to be on the table is their "Teochew Seafood White Bee Hoon", although this might look rather plain or simple but the taste is indeed good. From a glance around the coffee shop, you can see almost each and every table has a plate of this White Bee Hoon with different ingredient such as seafood, fish, or normal.

This seems to be a cross between zhi cha Fried Bee Hoon and "Hokkien Fried Prawn Noodle - 福建面". Both are fried with prawn or other ingredients then braised with some gravy and egg sauce then served with small lime for that extra fragrant. This dish also come with their special homemade belacan chilli which makes the bee hoon even more tastier.

We also ordered our all-time favourite which is this "Xia Zao - 虾枣". There are a few version of this tradition dish, some of it consists of ingredients such as "prawn, yam cubes, five spice powder and etc". The one that we had from this stall look great on the serving prawn, but the inner filling is too dry and it also taste salty compare to some of the best one that we have tried before. So this is not a recommending dish unless you prefer this kind of texture/taste.

We love this... I think this taste even better than the "Xia Zao". The bitter gourd is cut into slices (which in this case, they cut it slightly thicker than the usual one that we cooked at home). The egg and the bitter gourd is nicely fried and the aroma is so fragrant that you will want to keep on eating it. According to the waitress, they have two different version of fried bitter gourd egg, one is dry which is the one you saw on the above photo while the other is the wet version which consists of gravy and egg sauce.

Other than these 4 simple dishes, they also have a lot of signature dishes that you might be interested to explore with. I saw people having crabs, flower clams(la-la), crayfish and etc... all are worth trying.....

Hup Chong Yong Dao Foo

Those who stays around Toa Payoh Lorong 2, or working either around Yellow Pages Building or Singapore Press Holdings might have tried this famous Hak Ka Yong Dao Foo. According to those friends who have tried, they all comment that the soup is nice and the handmade ingredients are fresh and worth the waiting time. So perhaps next round when you are near Braddell MRT area, you can try this stall at Block 116, #01-148, Toa Payoh Lorong 2.

The stall located at the right end corner in the coffee shop and you can find a range of homemade yong dao foo arranged nicely on the shelf. On and off you can see people queuing up to pick their ingredients and everyone have to wait for at least 20 minutes or so during lunch/dinner hours for a good bowl of Yong Dao Foo here.

I have heard a lot of good review about their soup and their specialty items. The must tries are the deep fried meatball and they special homemade "ngoh hiang". So without much delay, I order a set of Soup with Rice and another set of dry version with yellow noodle.

Overall the soup base is great is full of flavour and kind of sweet due to the adding of Ikan Bilis, Soy Bean and etc. And their special homemade "ngoh hiang" really taste different from those that is serve in other stall as their filling is smooth, soft and tasty. Posted by Picasa

Char-Grill Bar

Saw some good reviews from some food bloggers site about this Western Stall in one of the coffee shop at Yishun Ave 11. And after taking a close look at the address, I realised that it is actually near-by to our Church cell-group venue. So today before dropping mum to the cell-group class, we decided to try out the food in this stall.

The stall has indeed a nice fast-food style menu with pretty lights and a bar counter with tall seats. They have many variety of food too, from different types of meat like chicken, beef and lamb to fish and even pastas. Other than food, they also serve alcoholic beverages like Long Island Ice Tea and the stall is open till 3am on weekends.

For the start, we try their soup of the day which is the Cream of Mushroom that comes together with the set meal that we have ordered. The taste of the soup is ok, cannot expected too much from a coffee shop stall, but then at least it is not salty and it still taste good.

This is the Grill Fish Italian Herbs which come with a huge serving of Dory Fish Fillet, Salad and Cut-in Fries at the price of S$5.80 per set. You can choose any two side dishes with the main course from raisin rice, fries, salad, baked potato, pasta and etc.

Other than the fish fillet, we also ordered the Single Rock Burger Set, which come with coleslaw and baked potato. The Single Rock come with a piece of Handmade Beef patty that is sandwich before the burger bread and top with their special sauce. Posted by Picasa

While dinning at the coffee shop, at the place where we were seated which is just directly from the stall. We can see that most of the tables were fill with either the Italian grill fish or steak. So I guess these must be the popular dishes of the stall.

Sarawak Noodles Vs Indian Rojak

There is this coffee shop located at Block 248, Simei Street 3 which is directly opposite, Eastpoint Mall at Semei MRT. Since we are having Church service around Singapore Expo area, we decided to drop by Eastpoint Mall to have our lunch and stock up some daily groceries too.

Heard from friends that there is a stall selling Sarawak Noodles in that coffee shop that attracts quite a number of people. Or we decided to give it a try. From the menu, they have both dry and soup version and you can choose the type of noodles that you prefer, from flat/thin noodles to kuey tiao (flat rice noodles) and etc.

From the photo shown you can see the serving is actually quite a large portion with lot of ingredients in it. A bowl of this dry noodle cost S$3.50 each and it comes with a little bowl of Ikan Bilis soup which is tasty and fragrance.

From the same coffee shop, I spot an Indian Rojak stall at one of the corner. I was attracted by all the fried coconut flour balls, prawn fritters, egg tempura, fried tofu, vegetable fitters and fried tempe. I remember when I was a kid, I love to eat the Indian Rojak together with my late dad. It is him that both of us share a lot of common food compare to other members of my family. After you pick your choice of items from the shelf, they will re-fried it then serve with a bowl of dipping sauce which is red, hot and spicy with some mixture of toasted sesame seeds and crushed peanuts. Holland Village XO Fish Head Bee Hoon

There is this delicious Fish Head Bee Hoon which located at a corner stall in the coffee shop of Block 46, Holland Drive which is just a few steps away from the NTUC supermarket. When you talk about Fish Head Bee Hoon, I guess you will prefer it to be clear or milky soup base with either fresh or deep-fried fish.

We have heard very good review on their famous "Prawn roll - 虾枣" so before having our Main Course, we decided to have this as our appetiser. Indeed their prawn roll is great with that crispy outer skin and juicy filling which taste great with the sweet dipping sauce.

We ordered two bowl of XO broth fish noodles, one which is the deep-fried fish slices that comes with gorgeous amount of fish meat soaked in their tasty XO fish soup.

This is my 1st time having Deep-fried Fish Head Noodles. Although it might be kind of troublesome to look out for those extra pieces of fish bones, but I am very satisfy with the overall combination of their fish, noodles and soup. Maybe this is not the best Fish Head Noodles in Singapore, but I am sure it's worth the price to give it a try.

Other than selling XO fish Head Noodles, this stall also have A La Carte Zhi Char menu whereby you can order dishes such as:- chilli crabs, sweet and sour pork, fried rice/noodles, shrimp paste chicken and etc.Posted by Picasa

Jin Long Seafood @ Bedok North

"Jin Long Seafood Restaurant - 金隆海鲜菜馆" is always crowded and reservation is definitely necessary or else you will have to wait for a very long time before you can get a place or till the food to be served. From the waitress, we heard that the stall is going to shift over to the opposite block whereby they will have their own air-conditioning restaurant in a couple of weeks time.

When it comes to Tofu Dish, making a choice to order this "Jin Long's Signature Chai Poh Tofu - 菜脯豆腐" will never disappoint you. The Chai Poh(salted turnip) - 菜脯 topping was so crispy and light that I thought it was minced garlic at a glance of it. The tofu itself is very smooth and silky which you can hardly imagine something after deep-fried can still be so yummy that will melt in your mouth when you eat it.

Egg Omelette or "Furong Dan - 芙蓉蛋" is one of the most commonly egg dish that is found in Zhi Char stall - 煮炒摊. A plate of good and tasty Furong Dan depends on the skill of the chef as how he control the fire while frying the egg omelette. The omelette served in Jin Long is just nice with it's slightly crispy outer layer that gives you a very special aroma when eaten.

This look similar to one of my favourite dish "Coffee Pork Ribs - 咖啡排骨". But according to the waitress this is known as "Baked Sweet & Sour Pork Ribs - 港式烤排骨". The pork ribs are marinated with their special sauce then baked it until soft and tender. To us the taste of the pork ribs is good but the meat seems to be a little tough for older folks to chew it.

Lastly comes the "Deep-fried Scallop Combination - 千叶带子" which is also one of their signature dish where you can enjoy a few taste and texture in one dish. The ingredients that found in this dish are: scallops(you can see from the photo, the scallop used are of thick flesh), prawns, banana and bak kwa. Each layer of the scallop is sandwich with fresh prawn and banana that topped with a piece of bak kwa and deep-fried with their special batter. We have waited for at least 30 minutes for this dish to be served until we almost cancel this order, but luckily the end products was still worth the waiting time. Do give this a try, it's definitely worth the price of less than S$20.00.Posted by Picasa

Moriya Japanese Cuisine

Saw a food review on this Japanese Bento stall known as "Moriya" in this week "U Weekly(优1周) - 201". This stall is located in a coffee shop at Block 417, Yishun Ave 11. They offer a wide range of Japanese Cuisine from Bento set, Ramen to Omelette Rice which you will sure to find something that suits your taste-buds for the day. Since our family loves Japanese Cuisine, we decided to give this stall a try.

Moriya, occupied a corner at one end of the coffee shop. The stall is nicely decorated with a Japanese-style outlook and they even has a glass-panel that allow customers to have a clear view of what is going on in their kitchen. We reached the area around 7pm and upon looking at the stall from far, I am already attracted by it's layout and food menu. So without much delay, we decided to settle for these two items on their menu list.

We order a set of "Yakiniku Beef Set" which is worth for it's cost at S$5.70. It consists generous amount of Yakiniku Beef which is very soft and tender and it also gives a very fragrance aroma which I believed is sesame oil and spring onion. This Yakiniku Beef Set served with a good portion of seasoned Green Soy Bean(Edamame), Japanese short-grain rice, Chuka Wakame (seaweed salad) and a bowl of hearty Miso soup.

Other than bento set, we also order a bowl of "Mixed Seafood Ramen" which cost S$7.90 and you can have 3 Half-shell Scallop, 2 medium size Prawn, a decent piece of grill salmon and half a portion of Japanese-style soft-boiled egg. So far, this is can be consider as a decent bowl of good Ramen for a non Japanese restaurant standard. We love the soup base which is very light, fresh sweet in taste. Although the soup do taste sweet but I think it's not from the added MSG as we don't feel any thirsty after taking the food.

They about more than 10 different varieties of Ramen in the stall that you will sure to find something you prefer. As for the Ramen, they also provide a very special Chilli Paste which we love it. Their Chilli paste taste sort of like our "Belacan Chilli" but with extra ingredients that is great to add into the Ramen soup base.Posted by Picasa
