Cold Stone Creamery @ Orchard Central

On 12 March 2011, Cold Stone Creamery has its grand opening of their first outlet at Orchard Central, Singapore. Just a few weeks back during our weekend shopping along Somerset area we will draw to Cold Stone by it's attractive advertisement banner and Hip Hot music along the pathway outside Orchard Central. Within a few metres away from their outlet, we already can see quite a number of people queuing outside of their doorway waiting for their turn to try this new products.

Here we ordered their Signature Creation which is known as Chocolate Devotion that consists of Chocolate Ice Cream, Chocolate Chips, Brownie and Fudge serve on plain waffle cup at S$8.90. After ordering, we proceed to the waiting counter to see how their "fry" the ice cream with the mix-ins  and also some of the amazing "stunts" perform by the count staffs  as they threw the prepared ice cream up in the air and catch it back with the waffle cup.

Although for us there is nothing fancy or with "WOW" facts about this ice-cream as to compare with some other well-known local choices such as Ben and Jerry or Haggen Daze. But ust for your information, at Cold Stone you can mix and match your favourite ice cream in different serving sizes or just pick up their Signature creation from the following choices:-

~ “Like-it”(4 oz) Signature creation costs S$5.50;
~ “Love-it”(6 oz) Signature creation costs S$7.90; and
~ “Gotta-Have-it”(8 oz) Signature creation costs S$9.90.

On top of that you can also choose some add on such as plain waffle cup for S$1.00 or chocolate dipped-waffle cup for just S$1.50 to go with the ice-cream.

You can also take a look at their Signature Creations(click HERE) via their website. If not try your creativity by picking up any flavor of your choice and infuse it with different combinations of toppings ranging from chocolate chips, brownies, fruits, Oreo and etc.

To create your own (1 Flavor with 2 Mix-ins):-
~ “Like-it”(4 oz) costs S$5.90;
~ “Love-it”(6 oz) costs S$8.30; and

SOFT! Softserve IceCream

Soft!, a silky smooth Japanese soft-serve ice cream store which is barely a year old in Singapore. I personal loves their slogan, "Life is hard, enjoy SOFT!". According to Trixie, SOFT! use only premium Japanese cream that is low in fat content to make their softserve ice cream which pairs with their premium ingredients which imported from overseas such as Australia.

Using a wide variety of quality toppings, Soft! has came out with 40 special concoctions to date through rigorous research and tests to satisfy your weary souls. Besides soft-serve ice-cream, they do offer drinks such as Root Beer Float, Fizzy Cherry Float, Ice Milo Float, Pokka Coffee Float  and etc.

Can you make a guess on which flavour she is preparing for us? Hint: With Butter Scoth concoction on it :)

Yes! You are right, this is their NEW Maldon Seasalt Special using organic seasalt as one of the toppings together with butter scotch sauce. You will be definitely blown away with either "Like(s)" or "Hate(s)" for this special flavour. Some of us finds it blend well with that touch of salty from the seasalt whereas one/two might just dislike that taste and find it too salty to have savory ice-cream.
Price: Maldon Seasalt Special @ S$3.90 per cup

Nothing beats a cup of freshly made Softserve Ice-Cream with dried cranberry chunk and honey pearls serves with Fresh Mango Puree and Mango Pudding. The sweet and fragrant mango plup make this a refreshing dessert with a "thumb" up combination.
Price: Zara Mango @ S$3.90 per cup

When I first pop a teaspoon of this Sesame Way into my mouth, I was delighted by it's combination of black sesame sauce with vanilla softserve. The hint of nutty and bittersweet taste from the sesame sauce blends well the ice cream and azuki bean paste. When you sunk your spoon further down, you can find some sponge cake which goes well with the overall combination of texture from the spongy cake to crunchy sunflower seeds and etc. And don't worry, this is not a choice just for folks only I am sure most of the youngest would this combo too.
Price: Sesame Way @ S$3.50 per cup

The best selling flavor at SOFT! is their Godzilla Max which has a mixture of Hershey’s chocolate fudge, Oreo crumbs, Milo power and Post’s fruity pebbles! If you are a chocolate lover this is sure to be in one of your must have list in Soft!
Price: Godzilla Max @ S$3.50 per cup

Compare to Sesame Way above, some of us find this Straits Chendol a bit out of way in their concoctions combination. Perhaps the fruity pebbles should be removed and replaced by something else as the fruity taste from the pebbles seems a bit strong and cover the nice aroma and taste of the Gula Melaka.
Price: Straits Chendol @ S$3.50 per cup

This Lic Kat is a popular choice among couples where the softserve is based on top of some crunchy cereal and top with Horlicks, nestum cereal and butter scotch sauce. In addition, this cup also comes with a slice of kit kat which makes it perfect for those with sweet tooth.
Price: Lic Kat @ S$3.90 per cup

If you are interested to try some of these softserve ice cream, SOFT!’s flagship store is located at Downtown East(beside Wild Wild Wet), #01-23 with another recently launched outlet at Hougang Mall(beside Ya Kun), #B1-K17.

Lastly I would like to thanks Trixie Khong and SOFT! for the warm invitation and hosting for this tasting event.

Soyato! Healthier Choice of Frozen Dessert!

Soyato is a brand new  frozen dessert  concept that is made of only "Soy Milk" as the base, and contains NO eggs, cream or milk. So this would be a great dessert for those who loves ice cream in a healthier way and it is also suitable for everyone including people who are lactose intolerant, vegans and vegetarians.

This newly set up stall is located at basement level of Bugis junction which is opposite KFC. Unlike Mr Bean, Soyato offers a wide range of more than 10 different flavour soy milk dessert for patrons to select according to their liking. You can start off with any flavour of your choice in a single scoop cup at S$3.60 or add on a dollar more to move your scoop of choice into a "Giant Waffle Cone". But if you prefer some toppings you could always choose from their visible topping ranges of selections from $0.70 per serving. There are also some free flow drizzling sauces such as “Chocolate”, “Strawberry” and “Caramel” for you to go with your dessert too.

My Boy's choice of
Chocolate flavour single scoop with chocolate sauce.

Yancai's choice of "Apple Cinnamon"(the cup at the back) and Maureen's pick of "Royal Tea" to share with Kai.

Alvin and Lobs' settle with this double scoop of "Peanut Butter" and "Yuzu".

Soyato has more then 10 different flavour available for patrons to select and some of the exotic flavours are Yuzu, Black Sesame, Royal Tea and Honey Lemon. Overall I love their Yuzu and Royal Tea and I am yet to try out some other interesting flavour soon.

Their frozen soy desserts churned are made totally from low-fat soy milk which is an ideal choice for people with dietary constraints or those who loves ice-cream but are afraid of its fat and cholesterol contents. So why not the next round when you are in Bugis area pop-by their stall and ask their friendly staffs to let you sample some of their flavours before deciding on which one to go for. I am sure there is definitely more than one that you loves.

Ochado Chanodo (茶の道)

Recently I have shared a post about the 2 popular Bubble Tea competitors in Singapore where patrons are willing to queue more than 30 minutes just for a cup of their desire bubble tea. And in that post, I also mentioned about a new similar concept bubble tea outlet which is known as Ochado Chanodo (茶の道). (click HERE for post mentioned)

In today’s post, I will be reviewing more about Ochado’s varieties of bubble tea as well as their special toppings, which you might be interested to pair some with your drinks.

Ochado is located in the North area, which might be considered as an inconvenient area for certain people. But despite the location, they do served decent flavour of tea that are up to stardard compare to either KOI or Gong Cha. And I am sure good stuffs are worth for the traveling time and who knows it might taste even better compare to those that you have tried. This shop is just about 2 bus stops away from Yishun Mrt station, and you can easily spot it with its outstanding green and black furnishing outlook too.

James, who is the supervisor (店长) of this shop, told us that actually this shop is partner by a few bubble tea lovers including himself. Before setting up the shop, they actually flew to Taiwan to do research and learn about the operating procedures and also choosing the right type of tea leave for each item on their menu. Other than over seeing the shop, James also in-charge on cooking the pearls and tea. According to him, they will always discard all the unused tea after every 4 hours to maintain its taste and fragrant and this also applies to the pearls where he needs to discard and re-cooked them every few hours in order for the customers to have soft and chewy pearls. James philosophy is, he values his customers and he always make sure each and every one of their customers can get the best quality of Tea upon purchase.

I will review 7 different types of choices, with a few of it are on their popular ordering list. First let’s take a look at this refreshing "OchaDo's Lemonade - 招牌鲜桔茶" which is also known as “Ladies tea” according to James. This is a mixture of green tea with freshly squeeze lime juice (where you still can see the physical lime fruits in it) and top with preserved sour plum (话梅). Great cooling drinks to quench thirst on hot afternoon or after a heavy meal to wash down all the greasy food.
Type: Green Tea
Price: S$2.90 (Medium), S$4.30(Large)

You will be wondering what is “3Q” like when we first heard about this name. "3Q Passionate Tea - 百香 3Q 冰茶" is actually red tea with three types of chewy toppings such as Konnyaku Jelly, Pearls and Aloe Vera. A new combination way to stir up your palate with chewy pearls, crunch aloe vera and soft shredded jelly.
Type: Red Tea
Price: S$3.50 (One Size, Medium)

But if you prefer something lighter that is not too sour or without any sugar added, perhaps you can consider this “Honey Aloe Vera Tea - 养颜蜂蜜芦荟冰茶” which comes with red tea and aloe vera bits. The sweetness of the tea is from honey rather than Fructose (fruit sugar, 果糖) that is used in Ochado’s bubble tea. When you give this tea a sip, you can taste a light honey fragrant in it and at the same time enjoys the healthy bits from the aloe vera cubes.
Type: Red Tea
Price: S$2.90 (One Size, Medium)

James told us this “Grape Yogurt Aloe Vera - 紫色魔力冰茶” is one of the partner’s favourite drinks, which he will always order whenever he comes to the shop. Although the appearance of this drink might not be very eye catching like those shown above, but if you like graph flavour, this is a good choice. It taste a bit sour when sip but after a few mouthful, it will release a sweet scent that makes you crave more for more which indeed matched well with its Chinese description “紫色魔力冰茶”. For this drink they used genius grape flavour yogurt to blend with the red tea so I guess it’s a good choice for ladies too.
Type: Red Tea
Price: S$3.50 (One Size, Medium)

After those non-milk teas above, now it’s time to take a look on our “Star” drinks of the day, “Pearl Milk Tea - 珍珠奶茶”. I am sure more than half of those patrons who visit those bubble tea outlets would usually walk away with a cup of “Pearl Milk Tea”. So what are the main criteria you look for to judge a cup of good and recommending pearl milk tea? Is it the aroma of the tea, the taste, or the soft and chewy bubbles or all the above? I think I would leave this for you to share with me your comment if you do have a chance to try out Ochado’s Pearl Milk Tea…….
Type: Milk Tea
Price: S$2.90 (Medium), S$4.30(Large)

Roasted Tea with Azuki Beans and Pearls - 珍珠红豆烤奶” use roasted tea leaves to brew into roasted milk tea that served together with two different toppings such as azuki beans and pearls. I love the combination of azuki bean and pearls where the sweetness of the beans blends well with the mild taste of the pearls. The first cup of Ochado’s tea that captures my heart and attention is their “Okinawan Matcha Milk Tea - 冲绳抹奶茶” which is a blend of green milk tea with azuki beans topping where I also added some extra pearls in it. But this roasted tea with azuki beans and pearls will be more towards the sweet aroma side due to the type of tea used.
Type: Roasted Milk Tea
Price: S$3.50 (Medium), S$4.90(Large)

Finally we are down to the last review for this post on another popular order called “Pop Eggs Milk Tea - 魔力爆蛋奶茶”. Guess you will be thinking, “Pop Eggs” what is that? From a glance you might mistaken them as pearls, which they are quite similar on appearance and size. But when you get to try them, you will be surprised! These little “eggs” are actually from Japan and they will burst with some coffee liquid when bites so it a good choice for coffee and tea lovers. Maybe you would like to consider this for change from the usual chewy pearls milk tea if you like that popping effect tickling in your mouth like eating some salmon roes.
Type: Milk Tea
Price: S$2.90 (Medium), S$4.30(Large)

MUST TRY List!

Refreshing Tea: OchaDo's Lemonade - 招牌鲜桔茶

Ice Blended: Mango Yogurt - 芒果優格冰沙

Milk Tea: Okinawa Matcha Milk Tea - 冲绳抹奶茶 (with azuki beans in it)

Fushion Ice Tea: 3Q Passionate Tea - 百香 3Q 冰茶

QQ Tea: Pop Eggs Milk Tea - 魔力爆蛋奶茶

Kid's Favourite: Yakult Green Tea - 多多绿茶

Just to share with you some of their special toppings that are available in their store:- from top to bottom which I have label for your reference. You can find:-

1. Coffee Crystal (咖啡水晶) :- which is small cube sizes coffee flavour jelly that is slightly crunchy texture than grass jelly.

2. Konnyaku Jelly (蒟弱):- the jelly is shredded and it comes in two different colour which is white and brown, very unusual to have dual colour Konnyaku jelly in bubble tea.

3. Pop Eggs (魔力爆蛋):- if you like coffee and wish to try something different apart from the chewy pearls or grass jelly, you should go for this toppings. According to the store supervisor (店长), James, these coffee eggs are packed in Japan using freshly brew coffee and it goes pretty well with Mocha or Milk Tea too.

There is another not commonly used topping for bubble tea known as Basil Seed (罗勒子) which in Ochado they have come out with a new drinks known as “Aloe Vera Basil Seed Lemonade - 柠檬芦荟罗勒子”. Maybe I should give it a try next round. And while chatting with some of the patrons whom are queuing or waiting for their orders, they actually shares and feedback to us that Ochado’s tea has its unique taste which makes it the same stand as KOI café and Gong Cha too. But with this review, I hope it has given you a better idea of what Ochado can offer and perhaps you can drop by one of these days to try it out yourself and share with us your comments.

To end the post, Joyce and I would like to thank James (店长) and Noel of Ochado Chanodo (茶の道) for their warm hospitality on inviting us to this bubble tea review in order to for us to share some of their specialise drinks and toppings that might interests you.

Swensen's @ Northpoint

To start off our dinner at Swensen's, we have the "Clam Chowder" soup that is served in a sourdough breadbowl which is enough to feed two person due to it's huge serving. The soup is full of yummy ingredients such as baby clams, diced potatoes, carrot, onion and etc in creamy soup.

Here comes our main course which is the "Seafood Lasagna" with succulent shrimps and crab sticks between generous layers of pasta that accompanied with that attractive jade green creamy spinach sauce and topped with golden fried potato sticks. This dish might look good but it taste rather cold which we thought it might have being taken out from the freezer and just reheat in the microwave or so. And when eating, this cold dish gives us that greasy and odd feeling too.

For dessert, we ordered this "White Chocolate Blondie" and "Sticky Chewy Chocolate". The Chocolate Blondie is filled with rich white chocolate blondie sizzling with maple butter syrup and served together with Ol' Fashioned Vanilla ice cream and a shower of pistachios, peanuts and almonds. This really taste great for after meal dessert and it makes you crave for more after each mouthful.

My boy's favourite dessert which is "Sticky Chewy Chocolate" that he loves so much because the whole cup is full of chocolate! But before eating, he will scoop off all the whipped cream which he dislike the taste of it.

This Swensen's outlet at North Point Shopping Mall has being around since the opening of the shopping mall more than 10 years. And their newly renovated concept do add extra points to the dining environment. Posted by Picasa
