Birthday Treat @ Sakae Sushi Part III

This is our 3rd visit to Sakae sushi in the month of January. As we are all busy with work and etc during the weekday where my Birthday falls on, we decided to make it up for a weekend dinner instead. While flipping through the menu, we are struggling on whether to settle for Teppanyaki or Ala Carte Menu. And after some voting, we decide to get one item each from our favourite section.

First, we have a plate of this Bamboo Clam from the Teppanyaki Menu which cost about S$8.99. The bamboo clam is fresh, springy and nicely infused with garlic bits that enhance the overall flavour of this dish. I recommend to eat this dish with steam rice so that you can enjoy the yummy gravy with it.

It has being long time since my last tried on this "Agedashi Tofu" from the menu. I remember I used to love this dish a few years back and I even tried a few recipes on making this dish at home. I love the tofu which has a crispy outer layer, when bite the center is so soft and silky. This tofu goes well with it's special Tentsuyu broth which is make with Dashi, Mirin and Soy Sauce.

Tempura Ramen is something new to us today compare to the usual Tempura Udon or Ten Don(天丼) that we usually ordered from the menu. So far I notice that most of the Ramen in Sakae came in a very "HUGE" serving bowl which will give you a fright on the content in it. From the photo, you can see that the Ramen is served in some cloudy white colored broth, with soft-boiled egg, kamaboko, spinach and etc. And it is also served with a pair of deep-fried tempura prawns. We don't really like the taste of the Ramen broth which we find it rather salty.

We love Unagi, especially the Unagi Don, but today we would like to try something new so we pick up this "Unagi Tamago Toji" from the Hotplate section. Imagine, combining the yummy Unagi with Tamago Toji(eggdrop soup) on the Hotplate and served piping hot together with a bowl of steam rice. Wow.. isn't that great for a hearty meal where you can enjoy fish, egg, vegetables and mushroom all in one.

I used to love this deep-fried sushi which is coated with a layer of batter which makes it taste crispy and fragrant. Fried Maki is one of the colour plate item found under the Side Order Menu. I have not tasted this for about a year or so and today we find that it is rather not the same taste as what we used to have before. Maybe is the ingredients or somehow rather something is different from the past. Posted by Picasa

Birthday Treat @ Sakae Sushi Part II

Today's lunch was a very special treat because Rey had being looking forward for it for a long long time. He has being talking about having SAKAE sushi with his best Facebook playmate.... "Ah Pooh" since the 1st day she return to Singapore. Joyce is a very good friend, sister and listener of mine thru MSN and facebook for the past two years while she was away in Australia :) And with similar tastebuds as us, she is also one of the Sakae sushi fan.....and she loves the raw Salmon slices ...just the way I do.....

But today's lunch treat, we have special mission.... Joyce was curious on how I take my photo shots before the meal and what are the angles that I will snap and etc... So this lunch was actually a very interesting and meaningful treat. Secondly it also meant for us to have an early celebration for my coming birthday in Mid January.... :p

Other than taking the usual items that we like, we also ordered 3 special items that we are going to try and share with the readers. First to arrive on the table is the"Beancurd Roll" shown on the first photo on top, but we are kind of shock with the dish. Because it seems rather different from what we saw from the menu which is something shown on the sakae photo above. As you can see from the Sakae photo, the white portion(seems like the doufu) is thicker and it clean and crispy on the outlook rather than the black sauce that drizzle on our serving....... Although the sauce taste quite nice, but it is sort of contradict to the photo shown on the menu which might be a bit misleading....

While flipping through the ordering menu, J & I decided to ordered this "Tempura With Yuzu Soba" which we find it worth the price of S$13.99 which consists generous amount of cold Yuzu Soba, a plate of assorted Tempura Moriawase. When we are busying taking photo shots of this dish, we are kind of caught off with what is the purpose of that little quail egg. Since we have not come across using this egg in any soba dish that we have tried before, we decided to approached the store manager for help. And she was very kind enough to explain to us that the egg is to be crack into the soba dipping sauce and eat together with the noodles. So at least in the end we knew that it is the same as what we thought it is used for :)

The Yuzu Soba taste great with it's QQ texture and a light "Yuzu" fragrant when you chew in your mouth. And this sure goes well with the deep-fry Tempura Moriawase.

Cabbage Roll is another dish that we ordered from the Veggie Delights section. Em... seems like today most of the items are from the Veggie section :p From what I remember, this used to be a similar Chinese dish where they wrapped the meat mixture (minced meat & prawn with some chopped carrot, water chestnuts and etc) with blanched Cabbage, steam it over medium heat till the meat is done, then drizzle some oyster sauce gravy on top of it.

The one that we have today is quite similar to the type I mention above, but the different is the one that served at Sakae is more of mixed vegetables filling such as Shittake Mushroom, Carrot and Enokitake Mushroom.

As for dessert, Joyce prefer something cold and sweet so she decided to go for the Peach Mochi Ice Cream. Em.... so far I have tried all flavour of Mochi Ice Cream except this peach flavour but personally I still prefer the Lychee flavour which is more fragrant.... em... wonder will Sakae bring in some DURIAN flavour... :p Posted by Picasa

Birthday Treat @ Sakae Sushi Part I

January is a double Birthday month for our family and today my little darling is going to be 6 years old in 2010. This year, we didn't have any celebration/family gathering like what we to have in the past years. As Rey is a year older now, he actually proposed not to have any celebration party, he said he just wants us to bring him to have his favourite Sakae sushi and Swensen's ice-cream.......

So with his request, we actually bought him for a Sakae lunch after his school today and guess what we have for our lunch...........

As usual, Rey started to attack at his favourite "Tamago Sushi" while the rest of us also aiming for our "favourites" from the menu screen or the conveyor belt. First plate that Aunty Lily took from the conveyor belt this, Cheezy Crab Maki(which consists of soft shell crab). It has a layer of grill cheese covering the rice and the filling. The taste was rather special as you can taste something like smoke cheese taste.

While looking at the Menu, I have some craving of their Lobster salad which is a cold side dish. The texture of the Lobster meat is tender and juice and it's really quite a refreshing dish to start off the meal. If you are a Lobster fan, you might want to read more on their Lobster Set Meal from my older post. (click HERE)

"Saba Shioyaki" or grilled Mackerel is one of my mum's frequently ordered items on the list, she will often choose between this and fried Salmon Kamaage or either the one that is available. This fish will taste a bit of that "Fishy" smell so you need to squeeze some lemon juice on it before consume and sometime, there are also some bones which you might need to be extra careful when feeding the kids.

Other than the above, we also have "Fried Doufu", "Renkon Chip", "Salmon Nigiri", "Chawanmushi" and etc. While chit chatting, we were all curious about this soup which they called it "Dobinmushi" which is served in a tea-pot together with a wedge of lime/lemon. First you need to squeeze the lime into the soup and use the cup to drink the soup. Usually the ingredients, being the main focus of this dish, are generally consumed prior to drinking the soup. Overall, we have a very hearty and wonderful lunch at Sakae Sushi and most important is our little Birthday Boy is delighted with his birthday treat. So stay-tune for Part II of this month Sakae Birthday Treat!

Sakae @ Orchard Central

Christmas is a wonderful time to spend with friends and family to enjoy a feast while at the same time admiring the Christmas decoration and lighting along Orchard area. This year there are a lot of interesting design Christmas Tree in or outside the shopping mall of Orchard road. Today we are going to have our dinner at the newly open Sakae outlet at Orchard Central. As usual this outlet brings out an fresh and bright outlook which brighten up the whole dinning atmosphere.

From the menu, we order Root Beer which to our surprised comes in glass bottle form which is almost obsolete compare to the usual can drinks that we used to see nowsaday. Seeing this drink serves in glass bottle really brings back some of our childhood memories....... And before we went back, Rey also grab another new "Froggy Cushion" from Sakae which he used it as his supporting pillow......

For the starter, we had Asari Miso Soup which is just nice and cosy for the raining weather outside. The soup is nice and full of flavour while the Clams are just nicely cooked which brings out it's sweetness.

These Renkon Chips (lotus root chips) is one of Rey's favourite. But the chip that served in this outlet seems to be a bit different from the other outlets. As you can see from the photo, the chips seems to be a bit soggy, and it doesn't taste light and crispy from those that we had tried before. I think it is either being soak in the oil for too long or the quality of the lotus root is different.

Although Ebiko Sushi is not a must in our list, we will still pick it up on and off whenever we find that it is fresh from the conveyor belt. I am sure you will get to fall in love with those tiny, bouncy and juicy egg roe that is served on top of the wrapped sushi rice.

The Potato Salad at Sakae is always one of my desire choice whenever I feel like having some cold Salad dish. The mashed potato is smooth and tasty with some addition of carrot cubes. It is served together with some salad green as well as some crispy deep-fried "Salmon Skin" if I am not wrong.

Lastly, we sure can't go without Rey's favourite Ebi Tempura, but today we have ordered the Tempura Moriawse instead of all prawns. Tempura Moriawse consists of a mixture of Prawns, Imitation Crabstick, Mushroom, Capsicum and etc. The combination of the mix vegetables will varies from time to time depend on the availability. Lobster Feast @ Sakae Sushi

It's another food venture time at Sakae Sushi. Today, we are going to have Seafood Melody at Sakae Sushi and everyone of us are so excited about it...... So, if you want to know more about what is going on at this Seafood feast........ Don't wait anymore, click on the Read More link now.......

Sakae Sushi at Sembawang, Sun Plaza Shopping mall is one the revamp outlet whereby they have this kids' corner which is like a small playground for kids to hang around while the parents can enjoy their meal and at the same time supervise their kids at a visible distance. Other than the kids' playground, this outlet also have a little conveyor belt corner especially cater for kids to enjoy their version of kids' sushi and bento.

As usual, we have to settle the kid first before our meal. Rey will always request for his favourite Tamago Nigiri to go with Ebi Tempura. And Ebi is the only item that he likes to eat as a finger food during our visit to Sakae. But sometime, he will reject this if the prawns are over-fried or the crumbs have soften by the time this dish is served to us.

This is the first time I ordered Warm Sake from Sakae Sushi. Since we are having seafood and the weather is pretty cooling due to the raining season, we thought maybe we can get a bottle of this to warm up our stomach before the meal. And according to their Beverages menu there are 3 different types of Sake that you can choose from. The taste of the Sake that is quite similar to the Chinese Rice Wine - 米酒 which is sweet and fragrance. But at a glance you might thought it look more like plain water than wine........

From their promotion pamphlet on the weekend Teppanyaki, whenever you order any set menu, you are entitled to purchase 1 Fresh Oyster which is direct air-flown from France at a special price of S$1.50 each. So with this great deal,on hand, we decided to get two. One which is raw while the other I choose to have it grill with white sauce. But whichever method it served, both are great for it's taste.

We ordered the special promotion on Boston Lobster Set for 2 which comes with these following dishes as well as salad, rice and miso soup. The first side-dish to set on the table is this 4 Half-shell Scallops that are cooked with special sauce and minced garlic.

A plate of Assorted Stir-fry Vegetables which consists of mushroom, assorted beansprouts, onion and minced garlic. We love the crunchiness of this stir-fry vegetable which is fresh and not over-cooked.

I am not sure how they prepared this chicken dishes, to me it taste sweet and somehow rather like honey chicken or maybe grill chicken pieces with Teriyaki Sauce. But this is another dish that goes well with their Japanese short-grain rice and miso soup.

Here comes the STAR of tonight's dish which is the Boston Lobster. The chef divides the lobster into a 3 different parts and served it in different cooking methods. First to be served on the table is these two huge Lobster Claws which they thoughtful crack the hard shell into easier breakable parts that allows us to eat the meat easily. I must confess that even at the claws part, the meat is sweet and tender.

The Lobster head is chop into smaller portion and simmered in an aluminum foil to cook into a savoury Lobster broth. The broth was fragrance and full of flavour and goodness that are released from the sweetness of the lobster meat.

Out of the 3 different cooking method and portion of the Lobster, I guess most of you will aim on this Lobster Tail which is cooked with a kind of creamy sauce that consists of butter, mayonnaise and herbs. The meat is so succulent and each bites is full of satisfactory from the combination of the sauce. Although this set costs around S$49.90, I guess it is still worth the price for the taste of the freshness of this Boston Lobster which you can eat from Head to Tail.

After a hearty meal, it will be great to end with something sweet and luxury..... So we decided to order a Tempura Ice-Cream which is hot on the outer skin but cold and creamy inside. This is absolutely a great dessert to accompany those wine, seafood, vegetable and meat.......Posted by Picasa

Hearty Sakae Dinner

Tonight Grandma is not preparing any dinner as she is caught up with some church activities. On the other hand, Rey was excited as he can look forward to grab some of his favourite snack outside rather than his usual meal. But we were rather too tired to think of where to go for dinner after a long day at work. So Rey suggest that he wanted to eat his favourite Sakae Sushi...........

As I still have some credit in my Sakae Card, we decided to head for Sushi Dinner as what Rey has suggested. We reached there about 8pm and Rey is already too hungry to wait for his favourite Tamago to be "appear" on the conveyor belt. So he starts off with 2 plates of his 2nd favourite on the list - "Kanikama"(which is sushi rice topped with cooked imitation crabmeat)

While waiting for our orders to be served, we kick off with this little treat before meal. Initially I thought of getting the Lychee flavour which we had previously, but it's not available today. So the waitress recommend us to try this Strawberry flavour instead. Overall it still taste great but I still prefer the Lychee Flavour maybe due to it's light and refreshing fragrant :)

Everyone of us loves the Gari(Ginger Pickle) that is available in Sakae. It is say that these ginger pickle is used to freshen the palate between sushi bites as well as aids the body in digestion. I love the sweet and sour taste that goes well especially with salmon and deep-fry stuffs. So next round when you are in Sakae or any Japanese Restaurant do look-up for this special little treat that you might fall in love with.

Tonight we are not having any sushi other than Rey's having his Kanikama. I order Tempura Udon because I feel like having something soupy rather than rice and Rey also can have one of his Tempura Prawn (天婦羅) to go with his sushi.

On and off I do see people ordering this Salmon Don which is a bowl of sushi rice top with generous amount of fresh Salmon slices, cucumber, lemon and a spoonful of Fish roes and some nori strips. This set cost S$7.99 comes with a bowl of Miso Soup which is great for it's value.
