[recipes] Honey Tempura Prawns + Tips On Using Honey

Honey Prawns are a popular Chinese takeaway / take out dish in most western countries such as Australia and United States. But do you actually this dish can be easily prepare at home with just a few basic ingredients that are available in your pantry? Moreover this delicious dish can also be serve as a party food or together with some steamed rice for quick week night 1-dish meal.



HONEY TEMPURA PRAWNS


Honey Tempura Prawns
Love this quick and easy 1-Dish meal which I serve it with mixed brown and red rice plus a sunny-side up egg. The tempura prawn has a crispy batter that coats with hint of sweet fragrant honey and toasted sesame seeds which makes each bite so irresistible. Beside prawns, you chicken can be used as replacement for this recipe too.

Ingredients For Honey Tempura Prawns

(Yield: 2 | Preparation: 20 minutes | Cooking: 5 minutes)

Ingredients:
  • 12 Large Uncooked Prawns, peeled, tails intact
  • 1/4 Cup Huiji Honey
  • 2 Tablespoons Sesame Seeds, toasted
  • Oil For Deep-frying
  • Iceberg Lettuce, optional

  • Tempura Batter:
  • 3/4 Cup All-Purpose Plain Flour
  • 1/4 Cornflour / Sweet Potato Flour
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Sea Salt
  • 1 Cup Iced Water

Method:
1. Heat oil in a heavy-duty saucepan over moderate heat. Sift the flours, baking powder and salt into a large bowl and quickly whisk in iced water to form a tempura batter.

2. Toss half of the prawns in 1/4 cup of cornflour to lightly coat, shaking off excess.

3. Dip prepared prawns into batter, allowing excess to drain off and deep-fry for 2 minutes or until crisp and golden in colour.

4. Transfer prawns to kitchen paper towel, Repeat with remaining prawns and batter.

5. Heat up honey in a frying pan over low heat until runny, add in prawns and toss it quickly to coat. Remove from heat and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Alternatively, instead of adding the prawns into the heated honey you can choose to drizzle the honey over the prawns and top with toasted sesame seeds.

Honey Tempura Prawns

Tip:
  • To toast sesame seeds: dry fry it in a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat for about 5 minutes giving it a good stir/shake every 20 seconds.

  • Alternate Batter Ingredients:
  • - 1/4 Cup All-purpose Plain Flour
    - 4 Tablespoons Cornflour
    - 1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
    - 1/2 Cup Cold Water
    - 1/4 Teaspoon Sea Salt
    - 1 Whole Egg + 1 Egg White

    Method:

    1. Whisk all ingredients together and set aside for at least 15 minutes before using.

Cold Honey Lemonade
- Cold Honey Lemonade is always a refreshing summer drink to quench your thirst as well as boost up your Vitamin C intake.


(Yield: 250ml Bottle | Preparation: 10 minutes

Ingredients:
3 Lemon
1/2 Tablespoon Of Sea Salt
50 - 70ml of Huiji Honey
500ml Glass Jar

Method:
1. Wash and sterilized the jar by boiling it in hot water for 5 minutes. Clean dry and set aside.

2. Scrub the outer skin of lemon with sea salt thoroughly to remove the coating of wax.

3. Rinse, wipe dry and cut into 3mm slices.

4. Arrange lemon into the glass jar, add honey.

5. Close the cover and set it aside in the fridge for about 4 days in order for the flavour to developed and they are ready to be used.

*Note: This can be used to make lemonade or act as a marinade for baking honey chicken, pork ribs and etc.


3. Smoothing Drink
- Warm Milk with honey is a great way to relax your moon and promote better helps which caused by a long stressful or hectic day at work. Try adding 1/2 tablespoon of honey to a cup of warm milk (200ml) and drink it before bedtime.

4. Health Beverage
- Honey Cinnamon Drink helps to reduce cholesterol in the blood by up to 10%. To prepare this, simply add 1 - 2 tablespoons of honey + 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon powder to a cup of warm water.

  1. Ellen, I still have get use to saying take away due to I was born and raise in San Francisco and known to To Go or Take Out. My nephew also have to get use to it too. He moved to Singapore to do business. Being a ABC is not problem but cultures of certain things is.

    Have use honey in making cucumber drinks? It popular in states and refreshing.
