Unforgettable Taste of Reunion with Lee Kum Kee {Plus Giveaway}

I still remember vividly when I was a child I always look forward to those reunion meals that we had with our grandparents, uncles and cousins. I love the atmosphere where everyone get together at the big table and enjoy those traditional home cook meals with special dishes only available during new year.

As you know reunion dinner is an important affair especially for Asian families during Chinese New Year. But however people nowadays prefer to eat out in order to save the hassle of cooking and cleaning up. So I hope by sharing this post it will help to inspire you to prepare your very own reunion feast this coming new year for your beloved family.

Time flies fast and today is the 4th day of Chinese Lunar New Year which I believe most of you had a great long weekend with abundant of food and bonding time during house visiting. And out of the 15 days of new year celebration we are still down with another 11 days more to indulge with the New Year atmosphere and food.

Here I would like to share with you how we celebrate our reunion dinners with family and relatives during the week of Chinese New Year Eve.

Our 2013 Lunar New Year Reunion Dinners

Today is the 4th day of Chinese Lunar New Year and it seems like just last Wednesday we were all busy preparing to welcome new year and yet now it's already 3 days (out of the 15 days) past the new year celebrations. I find this year seems to be quieter as compared to previous years also you don't really find crowds around doing house visiting and etc. Perhaps due to the long weekends or raining weathers, most of the people rather choose to stay dry in doors or go for a short holiday trip too.

Usher In The Year Of The Snake @ PARKROYAL on Beach Road

To celebrate coming Chinese Lunar New Year, Plaza Brasserie is having the Prosperity Buffet from 28 February to 24 February 2013 as well as the Prosperity Buffet Feast Reunion Dinner on 09 February 2013 to satisfy all cravings.

In addition, Chinese New Year banquet dinner can also be celebrated at their ballroom on 09 February 2013 where guests can look forward to lion dance performance, Tea Appreciation performance by the Si Chuan Dou Hua tea master and the God of Fortune who will be making guest appearance to celebrate the Luna New Year with the guests too.

Ushering into the Year of Snakes, Chef Jackson has come up with a new creation of Fruity Yu Sheng which consists of fresh tropical fruits like Mandarin Oranges, Peaches, Rose Apples, Rock Melon, Dried Persimmons, Green Manago and Papaya. This new creation of Chef Jackson symbolizes an abundance of wealth and a well-rounded life which enhanced with Chef's fruit Flavoured Sauce.

Personally I love the sweet and refreshing after taste of this Fruity Yusheng which makes me craving for more after each mouthful.  But if you are not into fruits, traditional Yu Sheng will also be available too.

Although the this is known as "Mini Pen Cai" but within you could find many special ingredients such as Fish Maw, Prawns, Sea Cucumber, Sliced Abalone, Roast Duck, Chicken, Pork, Cabbage, Black Moss and etc building up this pot of luxury comfort food.

Other than the highlight on Fruity Yu Sheng and Mini Pen Cai, there are also many other auspicious dishes like Eight Treasure Boneless Duck, Chilli Crab, Braised Pork Knuckle with Dried Oyster and Black Moss, Fish Maw Soup, Braised Sea Cucumber With Roasted Pork, Kong Ba Bao and many others.

Despite of all the delicious Chinese New Year cuisine, whenever I visit Plaza Brasserie, the first station I start with is their Sushi Counter where I love to pick up some colourful sushi and salmon sashimi as starter. Sushi lover should not miss out this station where you get to enjoy some of your favourite sushi, tuna/salmon plus edamame and teriyaki chicken.

There are quite a range of dessert at their buffet line where you could pick your choice from Pineapple Tartlets, Love Letters, Almond Cookies, Sesame Glutinous Rice Balls in Red Bean Soup, Egg Tartlets and Lapis Cake too.

But out of all choices, my favourite is still their Durian Nian Gao with Bak Kua which I recommend you to give it a try if you like the combination of sweet nian gao with durian fragrance to pair with some savory bak kua (BBQ pork) toppings.

What we EAT during Chinese New Year

Every year throughout the 15 days of Chinese Lunar New Year(CNY) celebration we would have some house visiting and food gatherings among relatives and friends. As usual from reunion dinner onwards everyday there is at least 1 food gathering where we get to feast different kinds of CNY goodies or special new year dishes.

This post shows how our family feast during the 1st 7 days of Chinese New Year.


EARLY REUNION DINNER @ JING LONG SEAFOOD RESTAURANT


Again this year our reunion dinner with in-laws is at their favourite Jing Long Seafood Restaurant (last year dinner HERE) located at Bedok North Ave 2. But this year their service was rather bad due to poor planning of dine-in timing and lack of serving staffs.

Deep-fried Soon Hock with Garlic - Crispy outer layer with tender and juicy meat inside.

Deep-fried Prawns with Special Sauce - Love these prawns that soak in tom yum taste gravy together with dong fen(冬粉) in it. The dong fen taste so delicious while soaking up the gravy.

Prosperity Seafood Noodles - This braised  Longevity Noodles with seafood is something new to me and I would want to replicate this yummy dish at home. For the sweet version of this longevity noodles you can refer HERE.


OUR REUNION DINNER AT HOME


This year I have prepared two simple dishes for our reunion dinner which is this Stir-fry Fu Gui Cai and Stuffed Mushrooms with Black Moss. (please refer to recipe HERE)

Second dish is this traditional Hakka Glutinous Rice Wine Chicken(黄酒鸡) where homemade rice wine is used to simmer the chicken pieces with ginger and perhaps some red dates for Chinese New Year auspicious colour. (please refer to recipe HERE)


CHINESE NEW DAY 1 - LUNCH


Braised Sea Cucumber with Mushrooms, Fish Maw, Abalone, Pork Tendons(猪脚筋), Dried Scallop(干贝), Black Moss and etc.

Love this Stir-fry Broccoli with Scallop. Very quick and simple homecook veggies.

One of the traditional Hakka dish - Braised Mushroom with dried oyster, roast pork and black moss.


CHINESE NEW YEAR DAY 2 - DINNER


Since the coffee shop below mum's place is not opening during Day 2 of Chinese New Year, she has to source for another catering to provide the food for evening gatherings. Here are the food that she ordered from "Feng Wei Seafood(Block 5 Tanjong Pagar Plaza)".



Braised Tofu with Mushrooms - Accordingly to mum the stall owner told her that they made this tofu themselves instead of store bought. The tofu is very silky soft and fragrance which blends well with the stewed mushrooms and sauce.




CHINESE NEW YEAR DAY 6 - UNCLE ALAN'S HOUSE


For a chance Aunty Grace did not order her Chinese New Year Buffet from the usual cater company this year. Instead she tried another food catering which is smaller in scale and provide quality style of homecook food buffet.

We all love this Braised Pork Belly(Kong Ba Bao - 扣肉包) which is well-season. Each piece of the pork belly is so soft and tender and it goes very well with the white steamed bun. Can't resists to eat more but have to control :)

This round we have Pork Ribs Curry instead of the usual Chicken Curry. Taste wise still acceptable but there is still room for improvement on their curry spices.

Yummy homemade Cheng Teng(清汤) which is not too sweet and yet taste great with generous amount of ingredients such as dried longan, gingko nuts, barley and etc.


CHINESE NEW YEAR DAY 7 - UNCLE LIANG's HOUSE


Uncle Liang is my mum's 2nd brother who is also known as "2nd Uncle" to me. Every years during Chinese New Year he would invited everyone to his house for lunch where Aunty Irene (aunty-in-laws) would whipped up spread of delicious homecook food for us.

Aunty Irene is very thoughtful and she would always prepared some of these finger food for kids(we always have around 10 young cousin).

This "Braised Sea Cucumber" together with lot of other ingredients such as clam, mushroom, black moss, roast pork and etc is one of Aunty Irene signature dish. Everyone I would look forward to eat this dish and I have tried to replicate once using her recipe too. If you are interested to read up more please refer to the link HERE.

Aunty Irene's fried chicken wings is also another of her signature dish. Her chicken wings is very flavorsome and remains crispy even if it is cold. Everyone loves this and we can have 4 to 5 in one go.

Very colourful homemade YuSheng (鱼生) prepared by my 2nd Aunty-in-laws and everyone praised for its' taste and freshness.

Although different people has different view of Chinese New Year, some might look forward while others might being "running" away from this festive season. But no matter which category you belong to, my advise it family bonding is always something heartwarming and it's good to gather everyone together and enjoy even a simple homecook meal. CNY Dinner At 3rd Uncle House

Chinese Lunar New Year is coming to an end follow by the celebration of "Yuan Xiao Jie(元宵节)" or "Chap Goh Mei(十五暝)" on tomorrow which is the 15th day of the Chinese New Year festivities. And often during this long festive season most of us will indulge ourselves with all those feast and goodies from house to house visits, company or gathering functions.

As my mum comes from a big family with 7 siblings, every year during Chinese New Year(CNY) there are always a lot of family gathering from 1st uncle house all the way to the 7th uncle. And each of the household will prepare their very own signature dishes to cater for almost 30 people during different days of the house visit. Although now our beloved 3rd uncle is no long around, Aunt Lai Choo(3rd uncle's wife) still practice the custom of inviting everyone to her house during CNY where she will prepared a lot of delicious home cooked food for us.

This big plate of Hotdog, Sotong Ball and Nuggets are specially prepared for the kids and most importantly these are not deep-fried as they are grilled using the oven toaster. (healthy)

For starter, we have this "Marinated Jellyfish(海蜇) with Century Eggs" where aunty Lai Choo prepares and marinated the jellyfish using her very own recipe. Upon serving everyone agrees that this is a very appetising dish and it is gone in less than 20 minutes even before the rest arrives.

It has being a long long time since I last had this "Fish Maw Soup(鱼鳔汤)". I remember my late dad used to cook this similar soup with ingredients such as Chinese cabbage, minced meatballs, and fish maw. But still the most unforgettable taste of this soup is from my great-grandmother where she cooks really yummy fish maw soups that makes you go for even 3rd bowl in a row.


Mixed Vegetables Curry with Longtong Rice.

"Teochew Style Steamed Chicken with Garlic Cloves and Ginger" is something different from the usual Hainanese Style where they cooked the chicken in boiling water then dipped it in ice water to produce a jelly-like skin finishing. Although steamed chicken won't be as tender as Hainanese style but it definitely taste much fragrant and sweeter as steaming method often locks the flavour of the ingredients.

I love this simple and yet delicious "Stir-fry Prawn and Squid with Tomato Sauce". Aunty Lai Choo is still very thoughtful that she actually removed off all the prawn shells leaving just the tail portion.

Lastly despite of those delicious homecooked dishes above, there are also some Agar Agar and Cheng Teng that are available for after meal desserts. So from what I always think, home cooked food is always the best food that unite everyone in the family together and nothing weighs as valuable as all family members  get together and enjoy the heart warming atmosphere of "family time".
