[4 Recipes] Overnight Oats (隔夜燕麦) - Part II

Like most people, I always thought that eating oatmeal is something boring and tasteless which often given to us when we are not feeling well. But recently after trying these "overnight oats" for two weeks it totally changed our perceptions about oats plus it definitely has transform our usual daily breakfast into something more appetizing and nutrition. 

And just to warn you these overnight oats are very addictive and you can hardly stop with just a bowl! Moreover they are also very versatile which you could create many different flavour out of it by adding a little bit of this and that. Below are three quick combination which we love and I hope they suits your taste buds too.


[Overnight Oats] Organic Rolled Oats and Black Chia Seeds
Above are samples of the Organic Rolled Oats and Black Chia Seeds which I am using to make my oversight oats. Likewise you can use any other brands that are available in your local supermarkets too but just to take note instant/quick oats are different from rolled oats.

Rolled Oats (燕麦片) or sometime known as old fashioned oats is widely used for making "Overnight Oats" because of its flavour and chewy texture. But if you are using instant/quick oats the nutrition value and texture would be different and you only need a good 10 - 15 minutes soaking time instead of overnight. Personally I would encourage you to get organic rolled oats for better health benefit.

On the other hand, Chia Seeds (奇异籽) are super seeds that can help to lose weight because they reduce food cravings by preventing excess food from being absorbed into your digestive system. With the seeds absorb 10 times their weight in water, forming a bulky gels it actually keeps our body hydrated.You can read more information about this seed on another separate post here.

[Overnight Oats] Types of Plain Yogurt
While experiment with different combination of ingredients for my overnight oats, I try using different brands of yogurt and these three shown above are our favourite with pocket friendly pricing. If you prefer something sweet base and low fat, go for the Marigold Low Fat Yogurt. But if you prefer something thicker and creamier, Farmers Union Greek Yogurt would be a great choice but it does have a tiny tweet of sour taste in it which you can mask it up by adding 1/2 tablespoon of honey into the oat mixture.  


BERRIES MANGO OVERNIGHT OATS


Overnight Oats with chia seeds, berries and mango
If you are a fruit lovers, this Berries Mango Overnight Oats is definitely a "must try" especially when mango is in season now. The sweetness and fragrant of the mango adds bonus point to the taste plus together with the colourful berries, I am sure this one jar goodness will brighten up your mornings as well as change your perception about those boring plain oatmeal.


(Yield: 500ml Jar | Preparation: 5 minutes | Standing Time: Overnight)

Ingredients:
  • 6 Tablespoons (45g) of Organic Rolled Oats
  • 1/2 Cup Fresh Milk (can be slightly more)
  • 1/2 Cup Plain or Greek Yoghurt
  • 1 Tablespoon Chia Seeds
  • Some Strawberries, halved
  • Some Black Berries
  • 1/2 Portion of Mango, cubed
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract, optional
  • Some Roasted Almond

Method:
1. Using a clean sterilized glass jar, add rolled oats, chia seeds and yoghurt.

2. Pour in milk till almost 3/4 full, drop in 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract if you are using then gently stir the mixture with a clean spoon to loosen the oats at the bottom of the jar.

3. Lastly add in your preferred berries (remember to rinse with water and pat dry with kitchen paper towel) and give a few stirs.

4. Cover the jar and leave the mixture overnight in the fridge.

5. In the morning, before having your oats you can top it with some extra mango cubes, roasted almond plus drizzle of honey (optional) to sweeten the taste.

芒果莓子隔夜燕麦

材料:
6汤匙(45克)有机燕麦片(organic rolled oats)
1/2杯牛奶
1/2杯优格/酸奶
1汤匙奇异籽 (chia seeds)
3颗草莓,切四分
5颗黑莓
1/2个芒果,切丁
1/2茶匙香草精, 随意
少许烤过的杏仁

做法:
1.用一个干净(烧水烫过并擦干)的玻璃瓶,放入燕麦片,奇异籽和优格。

2.之后慢慢加入牛奶直到近3/4满,再倒入1/2茶匙的香草精然后用干净的勺子轻轻搅拌把瓶底下的燕麦片和牛奶拌均已。

3.最后加入准备好的水果,再搅拌两三次,盖上盖子然后放进冰箱冷藏一夜。

4.隔天当你要享用时就以随意添加一些喜爱的果仁和蜂蜜调味,搅拌后就能享受一份健康又有营养的早餐了。



CHOCOLATE BANANA OVERNIGHT OATS


[Overnight Oats] Chocolate Banana Overnight Oats
As a chocolate lover I won't miss out any opportunity to make this this chocolate flavour overnight oats. So after seeing one of my Dayre friend @txjjean making her version of chocolate banana overnight oats, I decided to try making some too. Bu instead of using chocolate milk like what Jean did, I replace it with Valrhona Dutch-processed Cocoa Powder for a richer taste.


(Yield: 500ml Jar | Preparation: 5 minutes | Standing Time: Overnight)

Ingredients:
  • 6 Tablespoons (45g) of Organic Rolled Oats
  • 1/2 Cup Fresh Milk (can be slightly more)
  • 1/2 Cup Plain or Greek Yoghurt
  • 1 Tablespoon Chia Seeds
  • 1 Tablespoon Valrhona Dutch-processed Cocoa Powder
  • 1 banana (120g), sliced 0.5cm thick
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract, optional
  • Some Roasted Walnuts, roughly chopped

Steps to prepare Chocolate Banana Overnight Oats
Method:
1. Using a clean sterilized glass jar, add rolled oats, chia seeds and yoghurt.

2. In a small bowl, mixed 1 tablespoon hot water with the cocoa powder to form a thick paste then add it into the rolled oats mixture. Give it a good stir till everything is well combined.

3. Next pour milk till almost 3/4 full, drop in 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract if you are using then gently stir the mixture with a clean spoon to loosen the oats at the bottom of the jar.

4. Lastly add in sliced banana and give a few stirs. Cover the jar and leave the mixture overnight in the fridge.

5. In the morning, before having your oats you can top it with extra banana and some roasted walnut plus drizzle of honey (optional) to sweeten the taste.

巧克力香蕉隔夜燕麦

材料:
6汤匙(45克)有机燕麦片(organic rolled oats)
1/2杯牛奶
1/2杯优格/酸奶
1汤匙奇异籽 (chia seeds)
1汤匙可可粉 (cocoa powder)
1条香蕉(120克),切0.5cm片
1/2茶匙香草精, 随意
少许烤过的核桃

做法:
1.用一个干净(烧水烫过并擦干)的玻璃瓶,放入燕麦片,奇异籽和优格。

2.在一个小碗,用1汤匙的热水将可可粉搅拌成糊状然后加入燕麦片里拌匀之后慢慢加入牛奶直到近3/4满。

3. 接着倒入1/2茶匙的香草精然后用干净的勺子轻轻搅拌把瓶底下的燕麦片和牛奶拌均已。

3.最后加入准备好的香蕉,再搅拌两三次,盖上盖子然后放进冰箱冷藏一夜。

4.隔天当你要享用时就以随意添加一些烘好的核桃和蜂蜜调味,搅拌后就能享受一份健康又有营养的早餐了。

Notes:
~ Between this chocolate banana overnight oats might taste slightly bitter that the usual berries oats because of the added cocoa powder. So for a better taste, drizzle 1/2 tablespoon of honey before serving.


[Overnight Oats] Chocolate Banana Overnight Oats
Although the chocolate version might not look presentable, but with some extra toppings such as sliced banana (if you have time making some caramelized banana will be awesome too) and roasted walnuts I am it would look great just like those hearty breakfast serve in the cafe.



MATCHA OVERNIGHT OATS


[Overnight Oats] Matcha Overnight Oats
Matcha (green tea) fans! This is a must-try if you dare to explore some exotic flavour by adding some premium matcha powder to the overnight oats mixture. The overall taste will depend on the amount of matcha powder added so if you preferred a stronger matcha taste then max the amount to 1 teaspoon or slightly more.

To accompany this Matcha Overnight Oats, I added some roasted pistachio nuts (for savory taste) together with  decent amount of shaved dark chocolate and a good drizzle of honey to enhance its taste.

(Yield: 500ml Jar | Preparation: 5 minutes | Standing Time: Overnight)

Ingredients:
  • 6 Tablespoons (45g) of Organic Rolled Oats
  • 1/2 Cup Fresh Milk
  • 1 Cup (200g) Plain or Greek Yoghurt
  • 1 Tablespoon Chia Seeds
  • 1/2 - 1 Teaspoon Japanese Matcha Powder
  • Some Roasted Pistachio Nuts, roughly chopped
  • Some Dark Chocolate, shaved
  • Drizzle of Honey

Method:
1. Follow Steps 1 - 4 from the Chocolate Banana Overnight Oats shown above. Before serving top with roasted pistachio nuts, shaved chocolate and drizzle of honey to taste.

抹茶隔夜燕麦

材料:
6汤匙(45克)有机燕麦片(organic rolled oats)
1/2杯牛奶
1杯(200克)优格/酸奶
1汤匙奇异籽 (chia seeds)
1/2 -1茶匙抹茶粉 (matcha powder)
少许烤过的开心果
少许黑巧克力
少许蜂蜜

做法:
1.用一个干净(烧水烫过并擦干)的玻璃瓶,放入燕麦片,奇异籽和优格。

2.在一个小碗,用1汤匙的热水将抹茶粉搅拌成糊状然后加入燕麦片里拌匀之后慢慢加入牛奶直到近3/4满。

3. 接着用干净的勺子轻轻搅拌把瓶底下的燕麦片和牛奶拌均已。

3.最后盖上盖子然后放进冰箱冷藏一夜。

4.隔天当你要享用时就以随意添加一些烘好的开心果,黑巧克力碎片和蜂蜜调味,搅拌后就能享受一份健康又有营养的早餐了。

COCONUT MANGO OVERNIGHT OATS


[Overnight Oats] Coconut Mango Overnight Oats
For this Coconut Mango Overnight Oats I replace the usual vanilla extract with Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (EVCO) which is known for it's anti-viral and its benefits include healthier skin and hair, lower cholesterol levels, increased levels of immunity, proper digestion and etc. A little bit of this goodness oil do add extra fragrant to this simple and yet hearty breakfast of ours!

Furthermore by swapping fresh milk to mango yogurt it gives the overnight oat a lighter and yet refreshing mango taste too. Simply love these combination for a change!


(Yield: 500ml Jar | Preparation: 5 minutes | Standing Time: Overnight)

Ingredients:
  • 6 Tablespoons (45g) of Organic Rolled Oats
  • 200ml Mango Yogurt Drink
  • 1/2 Cup Plain or Greek Yoghurt
  • 1 Tablespoon Chia Seeds
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
  • 1 Mango, skin removed and diced
  • Some Roasted Almond

Steps to prepare Coconut Mango Overnight Oats
Method:
1. Using a clean sterilized glass jar, add rolled oats, yoghurt and chia seeds.

2. Pour in mango yogurt drink, 1/2 teaspoon of extra virgin coconut oil then gently stir the mixture with a clean spoon to loosen the oats at the bottom of the jar.

3. Lastly add in prepared mango cubes and give a few stirs.

4. Cover the jar and leave the mixture overnight in the fridge.

5. In the morning, before having your oats you can top it with some extra mango cubes, some roasted almond.

椰子芒果隔夜燕麦

材料:
6汤匙(45克)有机燕麦片(organic rolled oats)
200毫升芒果酸奶饮料
1/2杯优格/酸奶
1汤匙奇异籽 (chia seeds)
1个芒果,切丁
1/2茶匙有机椰子油 (organic coconut oil)
少许烤过的杏仁

做法:
1.用一个干净(烧水烫过并擦干)的玻璃瓶,放入燕麦片,奇异籽和优格。

2.之后慢慢加入芒果酸奶饮料直到近3/4满,再倒入1/2茶匙的有机椰子油然后用干净的勺子轻轻搅拌把瓶底下的燕麦片拌均已。

3.最后加入准备好的芒果,再搅拌两三次,盖上盖子然后放进冰箱冷藏一夜。

4.隔天当你要享用时就以随意添加一些喜爱的果仁和蜂蜜调味,搅拌后就能享受一份健康又有营养的早餐了。


[Overnight Oats] Coconut Mango Overnight Oats
Overall each overnight oats has its own unique taste but my current favourite are Coconut Mango and Matcha Overnight Oats. Soon I am going to venture into other flavours like Apple Cinnamon, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Matcha Azuki, Peanut Butter and etc soon.       From what I Google, rolled oats are steamed prior to being rolled which is different from Raw Rolled Oats. HTH :)

  5. I saw in NTUC, there's COWHEAD ORGANIC ROLLED OATS - BABY OATS (INSTANT) / COWHEAD ORGANIC ROLLED OATS - REGULAR OATS (QUICK COOKING) . Can they be used? Or any recommended brand that can be found in NTUC?

    1. Hi there. all the above-mentioned oats are of different usages and cooking time. For this overnight oats above, you have to used Rolled Oats instead of quick/instant oats. B/w there are a few brands of rolled oats available in NTUC so it all depends on which brands you prefer and the price wise. For me i prefer to use the brand shown in the ingredient photo above :) HTH

  8. Hi Ellena, thank you for sharing this recipe. My husband and I just had a bowl full of goodness this morning. Usually I cooked the rolled oats and add milk powder. I'm so happy that I don't have to waste tIme cooking in the morning.
    I added pumpkin seeds and black sesame seeds together with almond & cashew nuts. muah! Taste great and very filling!
